Bose Companion 5
$360.00
Released November, 2004
The Pros:Remains distortion free at higher volume levels. Great sound - produces rich, detailed and wide-sounding audio. Connects to a PC via USB - no analog stereo cables to mess with.
The Cons:A lot more capable (louder and better sounding) options for this price. Limiters prevent high SPL - This system won't get very loud if you're into that sort of thing. Doesn't really provide you with surround sound - only simulates a 5.1 setup.
The Bose Companion 5 Series II is a three-piece, multimedia speaker system designed for use with a computer. It builds from the Companion 3 Series II by incorporating larger, low frequency speakers. More importantly, it’s geared for 5.1-encoded games, movies, and music, meaning improved sound quality and performance.

Plus, unlike its predecessor, which is limited to stereo and auxiliary connections, this system adds along USB connection and power cord. In general, reviewers say the Bose Companion 5 provides a lot more fulfilling audio, and that it accurately conveys 5.1-channel audio. Unfortunately there are some things missing, such as a microphone input (which would be useful for gaming), not to mention an on/off switch.
